SEASONAL STAR VOLUNTEER
Spring 2008
Kendra Smith

Kendra and her brother were born and raised in the east side Detroit suburbs of Warren and then Rochester. She and her husband Bernie are the proud parents of five children and five grandchildren. Kendra works in a counseling / social work capacity for Romeo Community Schools. She is a photographer and gardener, is interested in scrapbooking, and loves traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

The Octagon House was truly fortunate when Kendra became a volunteer. With

Kendra came Bernie, who has also helped at the Octagon House. Kendra and Bernie and Kendra’s parents are truly Friends of the Octagon House. They support our events and were all frequent bidders at last Summer’s silent auction. Kendra and Bernie helped to “deck the halls” at last year’s Christmas at the Octagon House. Kendra has also introduced and provided some special items for Flora’s Shoppe, our gift shop, as well as auction items for our Christmas fundraiser.

Kendra became involved in volunteer work at the Octagon House in 2000. She fell in love with the beautiful old Victorian House and wanted to improve it’s appearance by incorporating beautiful gardens into it’s surroundings. Kendra, a Michigan State Extension Mastergardener, began by creating the first garden at the Octagon House, the Tea Garden. She is currently the project leader, the liaison between the Mastergardeners and Friends of the Octagon House. She is responsible for the coordination of the lovely Octagardens whose number has grown to twelve. The number of visitors at the Octagon House has increased tremendously. The Octagardeners, as our gardeners are affectionately called, have contributed to this increase by improving the appearance of the House with their attractive gardens. This has been accomplished under the leadership of Kendra Smith. Thank you, Kendra, for the difference you have made!
